About this Personal Tax Returns Agreement

This is T4 Tax Limited’s Personal Tax Returns "Working Together Engagement Agreement".

It covers our work to help prepare and submit your UK personal tax return, also known as a Self Assessment tax return or SA100.

Self Assessment means that you are responsible for telling HMRC about your taxable income, gains, claims, reliefs and other relevant information.

T4 can help you prepare and submit your tax return. However, you remain legally responsible for making sure your tax return is complete and correct.

This agreement explains:

1. What T4 will do;
2. What we need from you;
3. What you need to check and approve;
4. What is not included in this service;
5. Key deadlines and responsibilities.

WHAT THIS SERVICE COVERS

This service covers the preparation and online submission of your UK Self Assessment personal tax return.

This may include, where relevant:

a) Employment income;
b) Self-employment income;
c) Partnership income;
d) Property income;
e) Pension income;
f) Bank interest and dividends;
g) Capital gains;
h) Pension contributions;
i) Gift Aid donations;
j) Student loan repayments;
k) Child Benefit High Income Charge;
l) Other entries needed for your tax return.

We will prepare your tax return using the information you give us.

Where available, we may also use information we can access from HMRC or from third parties.

We will not submit your tax return until you have approved it.

T4 will:

a) Explain what information we need from you;
b) Prepare your tax return from the information you provide;
c) Use reasonable care when preparing your tax return;
d) Tell you if we spot anything that looks incomplete, unclear or unusual;
e) Prepare a tax calculation based on the information available;
f) Send the tax return to you for review and approval;
g) Submit the tax return to HMRC after you approve it;
h) Tell you the tax amounts and payment dates shown by HMRC or our tax software.

We rely on you to give us complete and accurate information.

We do not audit or independently verify all information you provide.

You agree to:

a) Give us complete and accurate information;
b) Tell us about all income, gains, claims, reliefs and tax matters that may affect your tax return;
c) Provide information by the dates we request;
d) Answer our questions promptly;
e) Check your draft tax return carefully;
f) Tell us straight away if anything is missing or incorrect;
g) Approve the tax return before we submit it;
h) Pay any tax due to HMRC on time;
i) Keep your own records safely.

You are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of your tax return.

This responsibility cannot be transferred to T4.

RECORDS AND INFORMATION WE NEED FROM YOU

You must keep records and documents to support your tax return.

Please provide copies of documents that apply to you.
These may include:
a) P60s;
b) P45s;
c) P11Ds;
d) Payslips, if needed;
e) Pension income details;
f) Bank interest statements;
g) Dividend vouchers or investment reports;
h) Rental income and expense records;
i) Self-employment income and expense records;
j) Invoices, receipts and bank records;
k) Pension contribution details;
l) Gift Aid donation details;
m) Details of assets sold, such as property or shares;
n) Details of any foreign income or gains;
o) Details of any other taxable income.

We usually only need copies.

You must keep the original records in case HMRC asks to see them.

You should keep records safely for as long as HMRC requires. We suggest keeping them for at least six years, especially if you have business, property or capital gains records.

This section is about some personal and family details can affect your tax return.

Where relevant, you agree to tell us about:

a) Your spouse, civil partner or partner;
b) Marriage Allowance claims or transfers;
c) Child Benefit claims;
d) The number of children Child Benefit is claimed for;
e) Who claims the Child Benefit;
f) Whether the High Income Child Benefit Charge may apply;
g) Student loans or postgraduate loans;
h) The type of student loan plan, if known;
i) Pension contributions;
j) Gift Aid donations;
k) State pension or other taxable state benefits.

We may ask you to complete a separate form to collect this information.

You must tell us if these details change.

This section is about the HMRC letters and documents that may affect your tax return, which you agree to send us copies of.

You agree to send us copies of HMRC letters and documents that may affect your tax return.

These may include:
a) Notices to file a tax return;
b) PAYE coding notices;
c) Statements of account;
d) Payment reminders;
e) Penalty notices;
f) Student loan notices;
g) Child Benefit High Income Charge letters;
h) Tax calculation notices;
i) Enquiry or compliance check letters;
j) Any other HMRC letter that may affect your tax return.

Please send these to us promptly.

HMRC letters often include deadlines.

We may not be able to help in time if you send them to us late.

NEXT - CHECKING, APPROVAL AND SUBMISSION

This section confirms that we will send you your draft tax return before it is submitted to HMRC.

You must tell us if:

a) Anything is missing;

c) Anything has changed;
d) You do not understand an entry;
e) You have income, gains or claims not shown on the return.

Your approval means that, to the best of your knowledge, the tax return is complete and correct.

NEXT - DEADLINES AND TAX PAYMENTS

DEADLINES & TAX PAYMENTS

This section is about tax deadlines and tax payments.

A brief explanation:

The main online Self Assessment filing deadline is usually 31 January after the end of the tax year.

Tax due for the year is also usually payable by 31 January.

If HMRC asks you to make payments on account, a second payment is usually due by 31 July.

You are responsible for:

a) Meeting HMRC filing deadlines;
b) Paying HMRC on time;
c) Checking HMRC payment references;
d) Making sure payments reach HMRC.

T4 does not pay HMRC on your behalf.

If you provide information late, we may not be able to prepare or submit your tax return before the HMRC deadline.

Late filing or late payment can lead to penalties and interest.

Unless we agree separately, this service does not include:

a) Bookkeeping;
b) Preparing business accounts;
c) Making Tax Digital for Income Tax quarterly updates;
d) VAT returns;
e) Payroll;
f) Company accounts;
g) Corporation tax returns;
h) Tax credit claims;
i) Universal Credit claims;
j) State benefit claims;
k) Pension Credit claims;
l) Detailed tax planning;
m) Inheritance tax advice;
n) Financial planning or investment advice;
o) HMRC enquiries, checks or investigations;
p) Appeals against HMRC penalties or decisions;
q) Software setup, software training or bookkeeping software support.

If you need extra work, we will tell you where possible.

Extra work may need a separate agreement and separate fees.

NEXT - MAKING TAX DIGITAL FOR INCOME TAX

MAKING TAX DIGITAL FOR INCOME TAX

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is often called MTD ITSA.

Some sole traders and landlords must keep digital records and send updates to HMRC using MTD-compatible software.

This is a separate service from the annual Personal Tax Return service.

This agreement does not cover:

a) Setting up MTD-compatible software;
b) Digital record keeping;
c) Quarterly MTD updates;
d) MTD ITSA finalisation work;
e) Checking whether your records meet MTD rules;
f) Training or support for bookkeeping software.

If MTD ITSA applies to you, or if you want T4 to help with MTD ITSA, we will ask you to agree a separate Working Together Engagement Agreement for that service.

NEXT - HMRC ENQUIRIES, CHECKS AND INVESTIGATIONS

HMRC ENQUIRIES, CHECKS & INVESTIGATIONS

This section explains HMRC Enquiries in the context of this service agreement.

HMRC may open an enquiry, check or investigation into a tax return.

This can happen even if the tax return was submitted on time.

Our standard Personal Tax Returns service does not include dealing with HMRC enquiries, checks or investigations.

If HMRC contacts you about an enquiry, check or investigation, you should tell us promptly.

We may be able to help, but this will be a separate service with separate fees.
