MARITAL STATUS

This question is relevant to "Marriage Allowance Transfer" so we can establish if applicable for the tax year.
The Claim has to be made by the lower earner to transfer some of their personal allowance to their spouse (or formal civil partner). ONLY available in a tax year where the income if one spouse is below their personal allowance and the other spouse is not a higher rate taxpayer.
(If child benefit has been claimed and either of the parents has income exceeding £50,000 some or all of the Child Benefit claimed has to be repaid to HMRC via the Tax Return of the higher earner. This is referred to by HMRC and Gov.uk as the "High Income Child Benefit Charge".
